  • Chef Monica is the Top Chef Contributor for Charlotte Prowler Magazine. The magazine is written for sports enthusiasts and people who love entertaining in the Charlotte Region.
  • Participant in the first Live online Google+ Hangout MasterChef Cook-a-Long. Chef Monica cooked alongside Fox’s hit TV Series MasterChef Season 4 Chef Contestant Jonny Blanchard and two other privileged fans.
  • Chef Monica was a National Chef Contestant who competed on the first season of Food Network’s primetime TV series Guy’s Grocery Games, hosted by Chef Guy Fieri and Cutthroat Kitchen with host Alton Brown.
  • Monica and her Mexican Stew recipe were selected by Food Lion to be featured at Food Lion’s 2013 ACC Fanfest Chef Challenge.  She was 1 of 2 Chef Challengers competing against the clock to create healthy, delicious and easy  recipes in 15 minutes.

  • Monica has 20 years of her experience in upper management and leadership positions within the food service, hotel, event planning and hospitality industries.
  • She has an extensive background in human resources training and development working with upper management teams in Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations on facilitating conflict management, diversity training, and team building sessions.
  • She has proficient people management skills, overseeing food service operations and managing large numbers of staff.
  • Monica once held the CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) designation; the second highest designation in the meeting professional industry; which led her to become a professional Event Planner to help others with designing well-organized events.
  • Monica was the Central Production & Distribution Coordinator for Gaston County School Nutrition and responsible for more than 25,000 square feet of inventory over 3 different major warehouse locations. Her responsibilities included ordering and distributing food and supplies for 33,000+ students at 53 locations.
  • While employed with Gaston County School Nutrition, Monica had the distinct credit of managing 1 out of 50, of the country’s School Central Production kitchens.
  • Monica was a High School Foods teacher certifying students with achieve their professional credential in ServSafe, a food safety management certification program.

 

 

Monica D. Smith is a native of Gastonia, NC. She's the mother of 3 children - who's also an impressive TV stage personality and cooking instructor. One of Chef Monica’s favorite quote: “The kitchen is the heart of the home and cooking is the vein for pumping out comfort foods. So circulate love with every dish and deliver your family and friends heart-warming meals”.

 

Chef Monica graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Foods and Nutrition from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.  She recently graduated with Honors from The Art Institute of Charlotte in September 2012 with an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts. These two credentials are making her a formidable southern comfort chef and personality in her community and culinary circle. She holds a number of professional certifications and is looking forward to earning her Culinary Certificates as she starts her Chef career. She defines her style as cooking modern-styled southern foods with finesse and lots of love. She has challenged herself to taking classic southern dishes and making them a little lighter by blending them with fresh cooking techniques and other regional cuisines.
